As we were coming back from the frigid north; that is Northern Georgia and Maryland, we made time for some fun and stopped for a visit with our friends Paula & Bruce.
There is something to be said for old friends who are good enough to let you drop by with only a few day's notice and still seem happy to see you.
Our fun day of touristing began with a trip over to The Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa, GA. Yes it is the one made famous in Band of Brothers.
We enjoyed the small museum - they have plans for major expansions over the coming years - and seriously debated going up Currahee but passed this time. Maybe next time.
Paula & Bruce took us to see the Georgia Guidestones. This local Stonehenge was erected in 1979 or 1980. It was commissioned and paid for by an anonymous person (or many people using one name). It has 4 huge tablets with one saying carved in Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Spanish, Swahili and English. They list 10 Guidelines:
1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion - faith - tradition - and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth - beauty - love - seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature.
There is also a tablet on the site that identifies the languages, lists facts about the monument, the sponsors, etc. A very odd thing to find in the middle of nowhere.
